Exo-skeleton series
Following a long stretch of burnout, Catherine picked-up painting again in 2016. Painting became her method of expressing herself when words felt inadequate. Inspired by surreal artists including Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali, she utilizes symbolism to tell the stories behind her work.
Her artwork focuses on the journey of self-discovery with flowers and nature as common elements to illustrate the subjects femininity and sexuality while also exploring the damage that societal contradictions has on those identities. The deconstruction of this conditioning is often a nonlinear, on-going, and messy process; her vibrant color palettes are almost a decoy for the darker elements hidden in the details or the subjects attempt at hiding them.
Between ‘16 - ‘20, her main body of work touched on the strong, albeit broken, parts of ourselves. In 2021, before moving to California, Catherine celebrated her gallery debut in Chicago, IL with the following collection. The MARTIN hosted her exhibition “EXO-SKELETON”, showcasing the work Catherine made during that influential time.
